On June 23, 2021, SLM Solutions officially launched Free Float, a new unsupported technology for metal additive manufacturing that opens up a higher degree of freedom for designing additive manufacturing based on selective zone laser melting, further advancing the process of industrial-grade batch production while saving costs. The technology opens up a higher degree of freedom in the design of additive manufacturing based on selective zone laser melting, saving costs while further advancing the process of industrial-scale mass production.
This is another breakthrough in metal additive manufacturing achieved by SLM.
At the heart of Free Float technology is not only the reduction of support structures required for molding, but also the ability to directly mold partial overhangs, low angle geometries, sharper part edges, and larger diameter internal runner structures while reducing print time, powder usage, and post-processing efforts.
These breakthroughs further optimize the surface quality as well as the lower surface roughness and porosity of constituent laser melting 3D printed parts, while also eliminating the molding space occupied by the support structure, thus giving users more choices in part placement and freeing up equipment productivity.
Free Float technology is available on most SLM Solutions metal additive manufacturing machines, and SLM Solutions is committed to making each new technology fit the needs of each machine, believing that the only way to realize the true potential of additive manufacturing is to create a truly open architecture.
