What is the difference between FDM and SLA ?

Post time: Oct-23-2023

As the two most common 3D printing processes, FDM and SLA printing are widely used in different industrial fields.

FDM is a 3D printing technology based on the principle of melt deposition, which uses thermoplastic materials, such as PLA, ABS , etc., to extrude the material through a heated nozzle, and then solidify the material into the desired shape through a cooler.

SLA technology is a 3D printing technology based on the principle of light curing, which uses a photosensitive resin as a material to scan the liquid resin through a laser beam and cure it into the desired shape.

Each of them has advantages and disadvantages

SLA 3d printing

Advantages

1.High precision & Perfect Detail

2.Faster printing speed

1.Easily Complete Large & Complex Models

2.Easily to make post-process, painting, plating, and silk-printing

Disadvantages

1. SLA parts are often fragile and not suitable for functional applications.

2. Supports will appear during production, which needs to be removed manually

FDM 3d printing

Advantage

1. Low machine and material cost

2. Barious material choice, like abs, pla, tpu

3. Good mechanical properties

4. Higher temperature resistance, suitable for outdoor use

Disadvantages

1. Rough surface and low accuracy

2. Slow printing speed
